Zeitgeist: Moving Forward

This is a pretty interesting piece. It presents an overview of our social-economical system and how it works. It's a very in depth and worth the time it really does make you think, Watch it with an open mind.

OMG

This is just hillarous.

Musically Speaking

I figured that I'd give you an update on my musical tastes and a couple of recommendations. They are not the prettiest of groups but the music is amazing.

The first one that I have for you is the new one by The Decemberists - The King Is Dead . I originally was introduced to them was through NPR's All Songs Considered when they were doing a piece on a festival. After hearing the piece I did some more investigating and was instantly a fan. The band is out of Portland, OR it has a good beat and just makes you want to tap your fingers on steering wheel. They have a folksy rhythm and has some roots in British folk music.
I'm not sure who I would compare them too, they associated themselves with REM, but I'm thinking more Blues Traveler, but even that is a bad comparison. It's feel good music, at least it puts a smile on my face and gets my toe tapping. My favorite tracks are (1) Don't Carry it All, (5) January Hymn and (6) Down by the Water. If you want to check it out before you buy it on OPB/NPR has a live broadcast of a concert the group did in their studio. You can listen to them perform the entire album and it doesn't cost you a dime, here's the link... http://www.npr.org/2011/01/20/133026865/the-decemberists-the-king-is-dead-live-from-portland
If you really like them they are on the road, so them maybe coming to a town near you.

The next band I want to tell you about is Sister Hazel - 11411 [Amazon MP3 Exclusive]
which isn't so much a new release but it's a sampler.  But it had been released through Amazon.com and it's FREE! I think discovered Sister Hazel I when they opened up for a Dave Matthews Band show. This band originated from down in Gainsville, FL. I call them an alternative rock with deep southern rock roots, I closely associate them with Better Than Ezra. Off of this album my favorite selections are (9) Firefly, (3) My Heart and (5) Sail Away. There are some good guitar riffs and it's will also get your foot moving.
If you were looking for a reason to check them out but didn't want to take any chances, well then here you go.  Here's the link if you need it...
http://www.amazon.com/11411-Amazon-MP3-Exclusive/dp/B004GGGZ9E

If you don't like either of these you should check out Amazon.com they have a butt load of FREE music there for your downloading pleasure in every genre you can think of. http://tinyurl.com/4psqos9
Other stuff that has been running through my head with little or no resistance...

Last 10 Tracks on the iPod...
  1. Dave Matthews Band - Bartender
  2. Offspring - She's Got Issues
  3. Everything But the Girl - Walking Wounded
  4. Nine Inch Nails - The Frail
  5. Peter Moss - U Can Work Me
  6. NOFX - Seeing Double at the Triple Rock
  7.  Frightened Rabbit - Be Less Rude
  8. Alex Martin & Toni Rox present Zoulcraft - Oclusion
  9. Spoon - Written in Reverse
  10. Travis Tritt - Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof

Ready For Spring

Is everyone sick of winter yet? I know my friends and family in the Northeast are, god only knows where they will put anymore snow. The good news is that there are only 25 more days until Pitchers and Catchers report for spring training. Oh and here's some eye candy ;-)

In MLK's America

Just something to think about in the last few dwindling hours of Martin Luther King day.
"This is America, where a white Catholic male Republican judge was murdered on his way to greet a Democratic Jewish woman member of Congress, who was his friend. Her life was saved initially by a 20-year old Mexican-American gay college student, and eventually by a Korean-American combat surgeon, all eulogized by our (half...) African-American President." Mark Shields, PBS

Random

Well the snow from the great blizzard of 2011 has released Atlanta from its grip. The snow in our yard is basically gone and what is left will probably be gone tomorrow. Its supposed to rain the next couple of days. It's funny that Atlanta got 1/5 of the snow that fell in Northeast but the response of crippling a city was the same. In defense of the local officials this was a rare occurrence, I don't expect the State, Counties and Cities to run out and buy snow plows to clear the streets. This probably won't happen again for another 20 years, it would just be a waste of money.

The NE Patriots lost to the Jets yesterday, which sucks. But at least the Seahawks lost on Saturday because otherwise I could see the headline now if they beat the jets in the Superbowl, "Flock of Birds takes down Jets". :-) I think I'll be cheering for the Da Bears.

I Tweet this yesterday I thought is was worth mentioning again. Something to think about... 90% of the cost of a bottle of H2O goes towards packaging and marketing, not the water. So out that $1.25+ that you spend on the bottle only, .12 cents of that is spent on the water. Which is probably just the cost of actually bottling it. Most of those bottles are just repacked Tap water anyway, that as a taxpayer you are already paying to have filtered. It's kind of ridiculous when you think about it. So you would be better off buying a reusable bottle and refilling it.

Did you know the new RNC Chairman likes dick? I don't mean in the Larry Craig kind of way, but he does have Penis in his name Reince Priebus, so I can only imagine that he is going to be a DICK. We will just have to wait and see.

Now how about some eye candy ;-)

There something about his socks that is just HOT!

A Moment of Silence

Before the moment of silence on Tuesday these were the words of NASA Astronaut Commander Scott Kelly. I really believe that no one could have said it any better. I really hope that everyone in this damn country listens to what he has to say.

At Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and aboard the International Space Station, flight controllers and the Expedition 26 crew paused to observe a National Moment of Silence Jan. 10, 2011. The event was held for the victims of the shootings in Tucson, Ariz., Jan. 8 that left six people dead and more than a dozen wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ). Station Commander Scott Kelly, Giffords' brother-in-law, led the station crew in its observance from 220 miles above the Earth.

Recommended Weather Parings

These are my recommend parings for the current weather conditions
For the Wine lovers here is a 2000 Magnotta Le Vin Ice Wine
Vidal Icewine has a deep golden amber hue, with fresh aromas of apricot, pear, pineapple and passion fruit. The wine’s smooth, luscious taste presents a pleasant combination of sweetness and acidity.

For the beer lovers here is 2° Below Winter Ale from New Belgium
2° Below a Winter Ale, but it’s more like an ESB, though the 6.6% ABV it will certainly keep you warm on a winter day. Starting with a mild sweetness this beer quickly changes directions to fennel, coriander, and orange notes (the orange is almost a orange candy) and it ends on a bitterness reminiscent of the oak in chardonnay.

Both are Yummy, And please remember to drink responsibly and Enjoy.

Snow Day

I woke up this morning with a text from work, it's a Snow Day! It has stopped snowing and has changed over to sleet now. So if the conditions weren't already crap, this should make it even more fun. But at least I don't have to go out in until Wednesday. If you can I'd recommend cleaning off your vehicle, drive and walk ways, before it freezes up.  Be safe out there folks and unless it's an emergency I'd stay home where it's warm.
Almost at 5 that was at Midnight.

Sorry it's out of focus. But you get the ieda.

This hill is going to be fun. It should be even more fun when it gets icier.

Domestic Acts of Cowards

Yesterday a man in AZ. opened fire on a group of people gathered to see Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords outside a Safeway. During this horrendous attack he killed six people and critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The shooter in this attack was tackled by a bystander while try to flee and is being held by AZ Authorities, a second man is being sought for questioning as a possible co-conspirator.

My Heart goes out to the family and friends of  the victims U.S. District Judge John Roll, 63; Christina Greene, 9; Giffords aide Zimmerman, 30; Dorothy Morris, 76; Dorwin Stoddard, 76; and Phyllis Scheck, 79.

This senseless act is a direct result of the poison rhetoric of the far right. I'm sure that the likes of Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle should hold some responsibility for attack because of statements that they have made directly and indirectly. Statements like "Second Amendment remedies" and posting maps on your website where certain other political candidates are represented with bulls-eyes is ridiculous. I hope that they are a shamed of themselves. I hope that they feel sick to their stomachs and can't even look in the mirror and face themselves. Because this attack is sick and makes me feel so angry I don't even care if the assailant  is put to death.

I'm not against freedom of speech and the rights of gun owners. However the use of a firearm is not an acceptable means of political discord. If you do not like your current political representation then there are other means to voicing your opinion. This was an act of domestic terrorism, the idiot that carried out this is not a Martyr he is a criminal plain and simple. If he acted as part of a larger conspiracy I hope that his associates face the same level of prosecution as the trigger-man. Whoever these other cowards may be I hope they are hunted down like vermin.

Christina was only 9.

Let The Games Begin

The first week of the new year is now over only 51 left to go. To make sure that we don't get bored with 2k11, it looks like that next week is going one big pain in the ass (and not in a good way). Depending on what news channel or weather website you look at here in Atlanta we could be in for the area of 2-8" of snow Sunday and finishing with a nice wintery mix on Monday. If I was still up in the Boston area I would not be worrying a bit, but this is Atlanta. There are no snow plows here though there might be a few sanding trucks but that's about it. On top of that people drive like fucking morons in just rain. What ever this storm brings it probably make for a really fun time. :-) Damn things are going to get messy.
..WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH MONDAY EVENING FOR NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA...A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH MONDAY EVENING.
AT THIS TIME...PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN AS ALL SNOW SUNDAY EVENING AND REMAIN PREDOMINANTLY SNOW THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING. MONDAY MORNING...AREAS FROM CARROLLTON TO THE METRO AREA TO ATHENS AND SOUTHWARD WILL TRANSITION TO A FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET MIX WITH THIS ENCOMPASSING A FURTHER NORTHWARD AREA BY THE AFTERNOON. AREAS IN THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS HOWEVER SHOULD REMAIN PREDOMINATELY SNOW. THIS SNOW...FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET MIX WILL CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR AREA ROADWAYS. WITH THE TRANSITION FROM SNOW TO FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET THIS WILL LIMIT SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS TO 3 TO 5 INCHES.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW...SLEET...OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.

The MLB All-Available Team

I found this on Boston.com and have been meaning to post it here is a team that could be field with all of the available free-agents in the MLB. I'm sure there are a few more of that were left out because they really Suck. But over all this is a pretty good team. If I lived in say... Pittsburgh or KC I  pay to see this team play in my city. I probably would add maybe one young arm for Andy Pettite. But, overall this would be a respectable team to put on the field. But hey if I was GM and I was in need of some talent there is some out there, just have to be willing to open the purse strings.

The All-Available team - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

There hasn't been a whole lot of baseball in the news lately and that's good. As much as we love it, getting a few days away to refresh our perspectives can be healthy.
To that end, here's a full team made up of free agents still on the market:

1B: Derrek Lee
2B: Nick Punto
SS: Orlando Cabrera
3B: Adrian Beltre
C: Bengie Molina
DH: Vlad Guerrero
LF: Johnny Damon
CF: Andruw Jones
RF: Ryan Church
SP: Andy Pettitte
SP: Carl Pavano
SP: Kevin Millwood
SP: Brian Bannister
SP: John Maine
Closer: Rafael Soriano
RP: Grant Balfour
RP: Brian Fuentes
RP: Jon Rauch
RP: Kevin Gregg
RP: Joe Beimel
RP: Kyle Farnsworth
Bench: Gregg Zaun (C)
Bench: Edgar Renteria (INF)
Bench: Jim Thome (PH)
Bench: Jim Edmonds (OF)

As you can see, the lineup is not especially good and the rotation is thin. The bullpen is pretty solid, though.

And, no, I don't want Manny Ramirez on my team.

Some team (the Rays?) could pick up some bargains on the relief market. Adrian Beltre must be somewhat mystified at what has happened after his great season with the Red Sox. The Angels and Rangers appear interested and maybe the A's will come back to the table. Can Scott Boras still produce a big-money, long-term deal?

1st Post of 2K11

Did everyone make it into the new year? I guess if you didn't you probably will not be able to view this :-D
I can't say that there is much that I will miss from 2010 and the past decade. I just hope that 2011 is a better year than it's predecessor. So I figured we'd start the year out with some music here is Jay Brannan rendition of  Reba McEntire's hit  "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia"!
