Memorial Day

Before one of the our political parties try to twist today to their advantage, let me say this. Over the last few years or so Memorial day true meaning has been forgotten, we have just assumed that it is the unofficial first day of summer. But, anyone who has lost a family member to a military conflict understands, Memorial Day is much more than a time to break out the barbecue or open the pool. Originally begun in 1868 as Decoration Day, the last Monday in May. It first was officially proclaimed by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic,

"...gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime....let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the Nation's gratitude,--the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan."

5 May 1868 in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

To all of those still on patrol, in the field or at sea that will never come home I say "All gave some...Some gave all...To all those who have served, are serving and who will serve..Thank you for your courage, commitment and sacrifice."

Just something to think about today. Enough Said.

Update on the Homefront

I've had the last three days off from work and I spent a good part of each day working around the house. I took care of about everything I had on my list, kudos' for me :-). The first day, Tuesday I cleaned up as much as I could inside the house. So most of the post flooding demo dust and debris is gone. On yesterday and today I concentrated working outside around the yard and tiding up making sure it looks like someone lives there. The grass is cut and bushes got a trimming. Which they were way over due for and were borderline out of control. I was also able to clean up the mailbox and put new numbers on it, it's looking mighty spiffy.

But there is still a lot to be done on the inside but we are leaving that for the professional and they start work tomorrow. So hopefully in a month or so they will have it back to normal. They also are going to address some of the short comings of the last contractors. I just hope they are more capable. We are using the contractor that our neighbors used this and the last time.

I go back to work tomorrow and then I'm off again on Saturday, so it will give me a day to get back into the swing of things. I'm looking forward to going back and a break from the mess at the house. I'll keep you up to date as things progress.

Bow ties are disturbing

Tonight I decided I need a good rant. Though there are many topics I could go off on I decide on something fashion related. Now I'm no trendsetter nor do I usually go out on a limb to stretch the boundaries, so I'm probably a source that the industry will not be consulting. But I was walking the mall today and I noticed a guy he wasn't a knock out or even funky looking. What drew me to notice him was his bow tie. I don't no what is but I just can't take people in bow ties seriously. They just look like a strange clown or something it's hard to describe, I mentally find those that sport these to be, um weird.
Maybe it's just me but when I see a gentleman in other than a tux wearing one I just want to yell "protect your children there is a molester near by!" It just send shivers up my spine. Living here in the South I see them more often than any where else that I have lived. It's not just an older gentleman that I see wearing one, which I some what expect, but I see guys in there 30's wearing them.
But who wears these? Stereotypically I expect to see grandfatherly figure, Republicans, Lawyers, geeks and clowns all wearing one. Okay enough of that, sorry Orville Redenbacher they are just plain weird.

Update on the Flood.

Over the weekend Ryan and I moved in to our temporary lodging, we got an apartment. It's pretty nice and has a real kitchen unlike the Extended Stay we were at last time. We also don't have to worry about the sketchy individuals that come and go from there. The clean up is going slow, today I got the kitchen cabinets all packed up and did some sweeping. Just trying to get the dust up from the demo is a bitch. The floor was still wet so it's caked to the floor and will take some scrubbing. Ugh!. Below are some pictures of the destruction, the ones from inside are to depressing for me to share.

I also want to send out a big Hug and thank you to the people at work. They are just plan awesome. They all chipped in and gave Ryan and I a bunch of gift cards for Kroger, Publics and restaurants. It was really heart filled gesture and I came close to balling my eyes out when I was given them. I think I have thanked everyone individually but I'm going to have to do something special to thank them. I'm just not sure what yet I have a few ideas I'm tossing around in my head.

On a brighter note I got the veggies in today, finally. If I had waited I think they would be lost cause. I was just glad I was able to save them when they started to float away. Yeah I'm not kidding, they were headed down stream. I'll post some pictures of the garden either later tonight or in the morning. I need to go check on dinner.

Wet Again

First off everyone is okay, the Munch or dog is in the kennel @ vets. The Zig the cat is staying with our awesome neighbors Erin and Earl. We are in a hotel until Saturday and hopefully after that an apartment. But unless a disaster area is declared (fingers crossed) for the area it will all be out of pocket so that is going to hurt. Ugh.

Just over 5 months ago we were well under 28" of water, we are wet again. This time it was only minor flooding at 10". Just enough to ruin the carpeting, flooring, cabinets and walls. Fuck! We had just about gotten the house back to normal, we were settling in and finishing touches. I was going to plant my veggies tomorrow that is now on hold.

As far as the initial damage report its looking like it will be structural as far as Ryan and I are concerned. Things could be different for our roommate. He lives on the ground floor. But because of quick thinking and we were able to get the more expensive furniture piece up out of the path of destruction.

Either way we'll get through it. Fuck!

I hate this Song

I haven't had a reason to spin out of control lately but I found one. I just wanted to say I F-ing hate the song Umbrella...ellla...ellla I mean I really hate it. I use that word very sparing-ling, just because it's a very strong word. But, Every time I hear it wish I could drive ice picks in to my ears or even run screaming off of a cliff. Seriously the song is terrible and I personally feel that Rihanna should be lobotomized so she doesn't put the world through such an audio horror again.

Now don't get on my case saying that's pretty harsh treatment, but it's just my opinion. Yes I know you may feel that way about one of the songs on my iPod. But I think we all have a song that make us feel that way. Maybe I'm over reacting.

But I've heard probably every version at least once and that only because was the most over played songs of the last year. The number 1 reason I try not to listen to pop radio, which is even hard to avoid now that media is controlled by a few companies. Then recording companies buy time to have their artist played and we are left to suffer.

Maybe sometime next week I'll post the top songs and artist on my iPod and you can rant about those.
