Happy Birthday Mother Earth!!!

Today is Earth Day. Happy Birthday Mother Earth, I know it's not politically correct to discuss a women's age but this makes you about 4.54 billion years (4.54 × 109 years ± 1%), give or take. I was going to plant my veggie garden this week but it rained on my day off so it is going to have to wait until this weekend. But I did transplant a couple of trees to new homes in the yard and in the lot next-door to us. It sure beats the alternative to ripping them out like weeds. Well they were growing the garden were to close to the house. So this should shrink my carbon foot print a weee bit.

I know all of the stuff about Global Warning is having some of you think that it's some kind of liberal conspiracy. To you I say believe what you want. But there are somethings that only make good fiscal sense and your family/community might even benefit from them. Hell reducing your consumption is kind of patriotic.

Helpful Hints
  1. I mean think about if you reduce the amount of fuel you use. You are keeping that money away from the countries like Iran, Russia and Venezuela which don't have the best interests of the United States in mind.
  2. Growing your own veggies and fruits are taste better, healthier and cheaper for yourself. So that's more money you can save, spend or donate. It also is a great activity for the family and it will get the kids outside away from the TV , hell they might learn something. This also will help with issue #1, by reducing the amount of fuel needed to ship produce to you local mega-mart. If you don't have the space for a full size garden buy small pots for your deck or balcony or even mix them in with your existing landscape.
  3. Planting a tree or two will clean the air in your community. It will prevent erosion of topsoil and it's shade will keep your house and yard cooler in the summer. It is also neat way to celebrate the passing of a loved one. If it's a fruit tree in 2 or 3 years it will bear fruit for your family to enjoy. You can get cheap or free trees from the Arbor day foundation.
  4. Car pooling or using public transportation helps support issue #1 by reducing the amount of fuel our country needs to import.
  5. Installing Compact Florescent bulbs reduce your electrical bills and last longer than Incandescent bulbs, so that will save money over the long haul. This reduces stress on infrastructure, helps clean the air a bit, and reduce the amount of Natural Gas used in power plants, which Russia is the largest exporter.
  6.  When the weather is cooler open a window or use a fan to cool the house, it's cheaper than running your AC units. I know here in the south that is easier said than done. But it can be done in early and late summer.
  7. Don't leave the TV and lights on in rooms that you are not occupying. That is just plan stupid no matter. If you are going away then put the things on a damn timer.
  8. Stop buying bottled water. Seriously many of the bottles you are buying is just re-badged tap water anyway. You have that at home so buy bottle of your own and save a few plastic ones from the landfill. A good bottle such as one by SIGG will last you a lifetime they have all sizes and pretty cool designs, yes it will cost you $25 dollars. But if you drink enough of those bottle it will pay for itself in a month or so.
  9. Don't leave the water on running when your are not using it. Take quick showers 5-10 minute, not hollywood showers as we used to say in the Navy( if it takes you more than that you need to loose weight). It will save water. I know it seems like we have a lot in the US, but lets be serious. Beside the glaciers, about a 1/3 of the fresh water in the world is located in North America. It's only a matter of time before it becomes a very valuable commodity. So lets save it for ourselves and the fishes.
So those are some ways that you can be Patriotic and help out poor old Mother Earth. It will keep the air and water cleaner maybe even save you some money. I really wish our country would embrace recycling like back during World War II, it was patriotic back then so why isn't it patriotic today?
