Buy American

The Big three US auto are urging "To Buy American", it worked back in the 1970-1980, but was it?? What is an American Auto?? Think about this for a minute…

GM owns; Cadillac, Hummer, Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, GM, Saab, Daewoo, Opel, and Subaru
Ford owns: Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar, and Range Rover
DaimlerChrysler: Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes Benz, and Maybach

These are only ones that I know of, I’m sure there are other partnerships or they have a small financial in stake. Now where do the big three manufacture their vehicles; in the US, Mexico and Canada, but parts also come from other parts of the world. So no US Car is 100% “Made in the USA”. Back in the 1970-1980 when US automakers first felt a loss of market share to Japanese, also revolved around the issue of fuel efficiency. As Americans bought these small Japanese compacts they also found them to be of better quality.

Going into the 1990’s the US automakers heard this feedback from consumers and upgraded their quality and fuel efficiency. But they got complacent and fell back onto old ways, hence the birth of the gas sucking SUV’s. Fuel was cheap again in the late 1990’s and the economy was good so we felt wasteful again. Now, fuel prices are through the roof and the US government has raised café standards for autos and SUV’s and the big three are whining.

(This is were I start ranting) The Big three are whining to us, Congress and the President, that they are loosing market share again. Help us, Help us someone bail us out we are in financial trouble, well GM is. We can’t compete in this market climate.
This after a Consumer group named Honda’s the best value for the money with the fewest problems. So of course people are looking at Honda’s, and so should the big three. Also these three have based their profits on the SUV not the rest of their lines, the SUV is a huge cash cow. Where as the Japanese auto makers entered into the SUV market pretty late in the game.
Now Toyota and Honda have reacted to the high fuel prices and released the Yardis and Fit in US markets. They both also have hybrids that have been drawing a lot of attention; only Ford has a competitive Hybrid out of the Big three. I’m sorry I feel no mercy and I’m tired of us tax payers having to bail out US business because of their poor business practices. How about they stop giving CEO huge bonus, retirement and incentives for poorly performing companies. Stop demanding middle class workers to take pay cuts and not cut your own fat at the top. How about try using technology and being inovative.
They are not getting any sympathy from me. Just for FYI, I own a Ford Ranger and I have never owned a Toyota or Honda, but maybe I should.
