Robin Hood in Reverse

Two days ago the Senate approved the budget cuts dubbed the "Robin Hood in Reverse bill". Why was it named this? See this bill cut only programs that many poor, elderly disabled and students depend on. My Senators Isakson (R-GA) and Chambliss (R-GA) both voted for this bill, my contacting them didn't help. My biggest concern was the cutting of $12.3 billion from student loan program. The student loan program took the biggest hit from any of these programs.
Why cut the student loan program? It's easy most students don't vote which is a big issue with me anyway. How does it effect future college students? Well the loans will no longer be a variable rate, it will be a fixed rate starting in 2006 of 6.8% and in 2008 it will jump to 8.6%. This can be detrimental to any low income or independent student, unless your family saved the $40-100K per child, for your son/daughter's college education you'll end up paying in the end.
Prior cuts from the Republican congress has reduced Pell and other grants that were available to students. This leaves students in the middle class and low income screwed when it comes to going to college. However, this does put the US Armed Forces at an advantage because students in these income brackets may look to the military for there college funds. I guess you could look at as quasi-draft.
There is still hope, this bill has been sent back to the US House of Representative for one more vote, so there is still hope. If you have children in your immediate or extended family please email or call your Representative office. Let them know how you feel and that they should be taking from the Rich and giving to the poor not the other way around. If you want to know how your Senator voted, I linked the voting record to the title of this entry.
